Europe Top Job Updates

Ford to cut up to 1,000 jobs at its German EV plant
Ford is planning to reduce workforce by as much as 1,000 jobs at its electric vehicle (EV) plant in Cologne, Germany. The reason: demand for EVs in Europe has come in below expectations.
The plant will switch from two shifts to one starting January.

UK jobs and pay growth are slowing
In August 2025, UK payroll employment fell (-8,000 jobs) and over a year there has been a decline of around 127,000 payroll jobs, partly due to increased payroll taxes and policy changes.

Wage growth (excluding bonuses) was about 4.8%, with total earnings including bonuses at 4.7%.

Unemployment is ~4.7%, highest in four years. Economic forecasts expect further cooling.

Bank of America leadership & job expansion in the UK unit
Bank of America is moving Fernando Vicario to London to head its Merrill Lynch International arm, its biggest non-US entity.
Additionally, the bank has announced plans to create 1,000 new jobs in the UK.

State pension rise + business/job shocks in the UK

UK state pensions likely to increase by ~4.7% from April 2026 under the “triple lock” system, which links pensions to inflation, wages, etc.

Jaguar Land Rover extended production shutdown (due to cyberattack) — affecting jobs and the supply chain.

Sky plans to cut ≈ 600 jobs in the UK, in part because of increased competition from US streaming firms.

🔍 Broader Euro-Labour Trends

“Hidden unemployment” / labour market slack is significant in Europe. Official unemployment in Q2 2025 is ~5.8% in the EU, but when adding people who are unemployed but not actively seeking work, underemployed, or available but not immediately available, the slack rises to ~11.7%.

Country differences are big: Poland, Slovenia, Malta, Bulgaria have relatively low labour market slack (< ~6%), while countries like Sweden, France, Spain, Finland have much higher slack (~15–20+%).

Labour shortages & surpluses:
Occupations such as welders, healthcare professionals, cooks, electricians are in shortage in many EU countries.
On the surplus side: clerical support roles and similar jobs are more affected, partly due to automation / AI.
